Overview

This accredited Civil Engineering Technology diploma program prepares graduates for an exciting career in the sectors of: consulting engineering; construction; local, provincial and federal government; and utility infrastructure.

The program offers students an applied and experiential learning environment where classroom theory is combined with practical hands-on and project-based learning, ensuring that graduates are ready for real-world practice.  Optional co-operative work terms provide additional industry-sponsored experience. 

This comprehensive program incorporates sustainability, specialized computer applications, technical writing, team work and critical thinking skills required for employment.

Career/Academic Advancement Opportunities

Possible career paths include field-based, office-based or blended work environments in the following core disciplines: 

  • structural design
  • municipal infrastructure and highway design
  • construction management
  • surveying and geomatics engineering
  • geotechnical and materials testing

Graduates of the Civil Engineering Technology program are also eligible to apply for membership in Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) and may apply for registration as an applied science technologist after completing a minimum of two years of relevant work experience. As this is an accredited program, graduates’ credentials are recognized through the Sydney Accord, enabling them to pursue careers all over the world.  Graduates may qualify to continue their studies in the Civil Engineering bridge program at Camosun College which allows transfer to the third year of the Civil Engineering degree program at the University of British Columbia - Vancouver and Okanagan campuses

Learning Outcomes


At the completion of the program students will be able to:

  • Communication and Teamwork
    • Apply team work and collaboration skills to promote effective communication and collaboration with colleagues, team members, and employers.
    • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with team members, employers, clients and non-technical personnel to accurately relay technical information.
    • Create clear design calculations, design drawings and sketches, and engineering reports to ensure the design is fully understood.
    • Use accepted standards and conventions in technical documents, drawings and presentations.
    • Demonstrate professional and ethical conduct as a Civil Engineering Technologist.
    • Proficiently use software applications currently used in the civil engineering field, including those for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, drafting, dynamic 3D road design, geographical information systems, building information modeling, and specialized software for other civil analyses.
  • General Technical and Lab Work
    • Apply relevant professional and technical codes, standards, and laws to all aspects of civil engineering work.
    • Apply relevant safety regulations and best practices in the lab and in the field.
    • Identify issues of sustainability (financial, social, and environmental) and the impact of these on design decisions.
    • Incorporate sustainable and green practices into all design plans.
    • Select appropriate methods for the inspection, condition assessment and rehabilitation of civil engineering works to ensure longevity of the infrastructure and to protect public safety.
    • Collect, analyze and interpret data in the laboratory and the field using accepted standards and practices.
    • Consider life cycle costs when making design decisions, including environmental costs.
  • Municipal and Transportation Design 
    • Design and draft plans for both new construction and rehabilitation of all standard municipal infrastructure works (water works, storm and sewage works, road and highway works and other pavement).
    • Discuss water and wastewater treatment options for removal of common contaminants and possible reuse of treated wastewater.
    • Identify components of an engineered landfill; discuss waste reduction and developments in energy recovery initiatives.
  • Structural Design
    • Identify seismic risks in civil infrastructure works to meet earthquake preparedness requirements.
    • Design and draft plans for structural works made of reinforced concrete, timber, or structural steel.
  • Geotechnical
    • Classify and test soils, asphalt and concrete according to the specifications of a project or civil engineering activity. 
    • Recognize geotechnical hazards and consider geotechnical issues when designing civil engineering works.
  • Surveying
    • Perform field survey data collection and analysis using current engineering survey equipment and software to prepare topographical maps and prepare for construction layout.
  • Construction Management
    • Apply the legal principles of contract law, intellectual property law and tort liability to the engineering profession.
    • Use project management software to facilitate tracking, documentation, implementation and evaluation of civil engineering projects.
    • Manage the construction process from development of the contract to completion of construction.

  • Graduates of this program with a GPA of at least 5.0 (B) may apply to the Civil Engineering Bridge program which bridges into the third year of the Civil Engineering degree program at the University of British Columbia - Vancouver and Okanagan campuses to allow graduates to pursue an accredited bachelor degree in civil engineering.
