Overview

The Bachelor of Athletic and Exercise Therapy (BAET) is a four year program which focuses on the prevention, assessment, treatment, and management of injuries and hypokinetic diseases. It also addresses the design and application of conditioning and rehabilitation programs that enable injured and diseased individuals to return to activity. The BAET program provides knowledge and advanced skills in athletic and exercise therapy, exercise science, and business skills to operate a successful practice. Understanding of the Canadian health care system, culture and society that will enhance services to clients, and the research skills necessary to stay current of the advancements in the field of athletic and exercise therapy are the remaining underpinnings of this innovative program.

Through extensive clinical and fieldwork experiences, our degree will provide students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and prerequisites necessary to seek designation as Clinical Exercise Physiologist™ with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP). The BAET program is an accredited program of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association providing graduates the opportunity to seek designation as a Certified Athletic Therapist.

Career Opportunities

Athletic therapists tend to work with the physically active population (athletes and recreationally active populations) and exercise therapists tend to work with those individuals who have conditions and diseases which have been the result of an inactive lifestyle (such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and obesity). Employment settings for athletic and exercise therapists are many, including hospitals, athletic and exercise therapy clinics, schools, physician offices, physical therapy clinics, community based rehabilitation programs, occupational and industrial settings, professional sports teams and sports medicine clinics.

Opportunities for Further Study

Graduates will have the knowledge, skills and abilities for advanced study in health promotion, public health, rehabilitation and sport sciences.

Note: Acceptance to the Bachelor of Athletic and Exercise Therapy Program is based on the cumulative grade point average (GPA) for the above four courses. The minimum cumulative GPA to qualify for consideration is a “B” grade or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, the learner will be able to 

  1. Develop and implement all components of a comprehensive injury/disease prevention program
  2. Present health care information, education and counsel on matters pertaining to the physical, psychological and emotional health and well-being of the client
  3. Provide immediate assessment, treatment and care for common injuries and diseases
  4. Conduct a thorough clinical evaluation of common injuries and diseases including the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains
  5. Administer appropriate assessments and testing techniques to determine physical fitness and appropriate course of action for the management of common injuries and diseases for the purpose of improving health, function and performance
  6. Design and implement comprehensive rehabilitation/reconditioning programs for common injuries and diseases including prescription, demonstration, supervision, and monitoring of client exercise sessions
  7. Organize and implement administrative components of an athletic/exercise therapy program to ensure individuals return to an active lifestyle
  8. Apply athletic and exercise therapy practices which address cultural, ethnic, gender, age, and functional ability differences and considerations
  9. Apply knowledge of personal and professional ethics and accountability to practice

Program Participation Requirements


  • Student attendance at a program Orientation session scheduled by the Centre for Sport and Exercise Education (CSEE) is mandatory. Clear expectations for the program and issues which may interfere with progress in this program will be addressed at this time.
  • Students will submit a portfolio, which includes the student’s declaration on preparation and motivation to the chosen career and two reference letters addressing ethical and professional capabilities upon attending the Fall Program Orientation Session.
  • Students will complete a program questionnaire, a lifestyle questionnaire and health-related fitness assessment that identifies their current level of fitness and supports their future development. The lifestyle questionnaire and health-related fitness assessment will provide individual baseline data and assessments for each student and will assist in the measurement of their progress over their program.
  • Students will be required to hold valid certificates for Standard First Aid and CPR-BLS which are mandatory in the program. Proof of certification is required by the last day of classes of the student’s first semester of the program.
    • Students are responsible for covering the fees of gaining the certifications
  • Students will be required to purchase a Bachelor of Athletic and Exercise Therapy Placement Medical Kit.
  • Students will be required to apply to the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) as a Certification Candidate 2 years prior to graduating from the Athletic and Exercise Therapy Program. Students will ensure they maintain their status throughout the remainder of their course of study in the BAET program at Camosun in order to be eligible for the CATA national certification exam upon graduation. 
    • Students are responsible for covering the fees of gaining the certifications
  • Students will be required to obtain a First Responder Certificate after the completion of the Emergency Conditions courses (AET 260 and AET 261). Proof of certification is required prior to the commencement of placement hours in AET 201.
    • Students are responsible for covering the fees of gaining the certifications
  • Criminal Record Check is required. 

Program Completion Requirements


  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 (C+) is required to graduate from the program.

  • Must obtain a minimum of a C grade in each course.

  • Students have twice the length (8 years) to complete the credential.

Additional Information


  • Students who complete the 4 year BAET program and graduate with the Bachelor of Athletic and Exercise Therapy credential will be eligible to sit the examination process for both CATA and CSEP and upon successful completion will have defined privileges to practice. Completing the program and obtaining the credential does not automatically allow graduates to be registered and/or licensed as CATA Certified Athletic Therapists or CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologists™. Graduates must apply for and successfully pass the CATA and CSEP National Certification Exams to become CATA Certified Athletic Therapists and/or CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologists™ .
  • The work environment in which you will be employed requires demanding lifting and moving techniques and extensive hand washing. If you have back, neck, or arm injury or serious skin disorders such as psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis or latex allergy you should consider carefully before making an application to this program. For the same reasons, if you have a significant health challenge you should consult with the Program Chair.
  • Due to the nature of the Bachelor of Athletic and Exercise Therapy program scope and sequence of coursework and the pre-requisite linkages among courses it is highly recommended that a student participate in the program on a full time basis to ensure relationships and success between term coursework and the attainment of placement hours
