IMHA 524 - Psychopathology in Social Context Credits: 3 Total Hours: 45 Restricted to Interprofessional Mental Health & Addictions students only Students will engage with the critical debates influencing contemporary mental health practices surrounding the etiology and construction of DSM V categories. The effects of historical, socio-cultural, and political factors on individuals, families, and communities with lived experiences of mental illness and addictions are explored. Students engage with the social construction of diagnosis from multiple perspectives and are encouraged to develop their own orientation to conceptualization, diagnosis, and treatment. Students gain competence in recognizing the behavioural symptoms of common, major, and persistent mental health disorders and are introduced to evidence-informed psychosocial and pharmacological treatments to facilitate recovery.
