Overview

Students in the Advanced Certificate in Ways of Indigenous Leadership & Learning (WILL) program learn to integrate Indigenous cultural approaches and ways of being and doing into their leadership of communities, organizations or agencies. Through blended learning including land-based, online and experiential learning, students gain perspectives and skills within an interNational learning community made up of Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners and teachers. The approaches, strategies and capacities acquired in WILL prepare working or emerging professionals, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to be successful in positions of leadership. 

Graduates will be prepared to support and enable Indigenous self-determination and lead change across diverse public and private sectors. 

Admissions


   All of:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution; and, 
  • An accredited Indigenous studies or Indigenous language course from a recognized post-secondary institution. 
  • Complete an interview with the Program Leader - in-person or virtually or a written statement outlining program expectations and leadership goals. 
  • Two references, one of which should be from someone in a leadership role (Chief or Council Member, Organizational Leader e.g., current, future or previous employer) 

    OR 

    Special Permission: 
    Applicants seeking approval Special Permission for admissions will be expected to provide the following for consideration:  

    Completion of one of:

  • C in ENGL 151  
  • C in ENGL 161  
  • C in ENGL 163  
  • C in ENGL 164 
    • Or equivalent

    And 

  • Resume or curriculum vitae showing a minimum of 2 years leadership experience in an Indigenous community, organization or movement; and  
  • Two references, one of which should be from someone in a leadership role (Chief or Council Member, Organizational Leader e.g., current, future or previous employer) 
  • Complete an interview with the Program Leader - in-person or virtually OR a written statement outlining program expectations and leadership goals. 

Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, the learner will be able to

  1. Critically examine core principles, values and practices of relational Indigenous leadership
  2. Demonstrate a lived practice of relationship with the natural world, and analyse and describe how such practice provides the foundation for Indigenous self-determination
  3. Integrate Indigenous knowledges and cultural teachings into their leadership philosophies and practices
  4. Demonstrate self-awareness in the application of Indigenous specific trauma informed leadership practices
  5. Apply culturally appropriate strategies to address complex socio-cultural dynamics related to Indigenous leadership and influence change within organizations.

Program Participation Requirements


  • Students may have the opportunity to travel internationally. If they choose to do so, they would be responsible for additional costs, and need to have a passport or visa and meet the country’s port of entry requirements.
