Overview

The Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation is a 39 week program that includes technical training and a work experience component. This program will be of interest to individuals looking for a career as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Truck and Transport Mechanic, Diesel Engine Mechanic or Transport Trailer Technician. The program will cover 36 weeks of SkilledTradesBC level one learning outcomes in the technical training requirements for all four heavy mechanical trades. Students will also be required to find an employer to complete a 3 week work experience.

  • COM in MATH 038  

Note: If you don’t have one of the preferred math requirements the college will accept a “C” or higher in Foundations of Math 11, or Pre-Calculus 11, or Principles of Math 11, or Applications of Math 11, or MATH 073   or MATH 137.

Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, the learner will be able to 

  1. Technical Training
    1. Apply and use occupational skills to service and repair Heavy Mechanical equipment and vehicles
    2. Service and repair brake systems
    3. Describe and service hydraulic systems and components
    4. Describe, use and service electrical circuits and systems to service and repair Heavy Mechanical equipment and vehicles
    5. Service, diagnose and repair frames, steering, suspension and track systems
    6. Diagnose and service trailer systems
    7. Diagnose and repair HVAC systems on Heavy Mechanical equipment and vehicles
    8. Service, diagnose and repair engines and supporting systems
    9. Remove, service and install power train components
    10. Identify and service structural components and accessories related to Heavy Mechanical equipment and vehicles
  2. Work Experience
    1. Occupational and workplace awareness
      1. Demonstrate knowledge of business objectives and processes used in a workplace setting
      2. Explain the duties and responsibilities associated with a given occupation or work role
    2. Academic/Technical learning

Curriculum


All of:


  • HEVY 110 - Heavy Mechanical Trades - 1080 hours
  • HEVY 120 - Work Experience - 90 hours

Program Completion Requirements


  • Completion of the training with 70% overall and a “COM” or “DST” in HEVY 120.

Additional Information


  • Success graduates will receive SkilledTradesBC credit for level one technical training as well as 450 work based hours credit towards an apprenticeship in any of the aforementioned trades.
