Overview

Students taking Employment Preparation will develop the skills, attitudes, knowledge and practices that prepare them for entry-level employment training. This program is meant to be completed in 15 weeks. Students will have opportunities to complete this program part-time over a longer period. Students explore interests, values and opportunities then set goals, and develop a learning plan to build essential skills for life, learning and work. Essential skills include the following: reading, document use, writing, numeracy, oral communication, thinking skills (such as: problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, job task planning, organization and finding/recalling information), working with others, digital technology use and continuous learning. Students will explore lifestyle practices that develop resilience and that support readiness for entry-level work. Students learn at their own pace and level. They will receive ongoing guidance and support to create and follow a learning plan. Students will also connect with resources and explore opportunities for learning, work and community connection that reflect their abilities, interests, and values.

Admissions


All students admitted to the Employment Preparation Program must participate in an interview to determine suitability for the program and for working in an applied learning setting at the college.

Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, the learner will be able to 

  1. Communicate respectfully with teammates, supervisors and teachers within an adult applied learning setting
  2. Promote personal strengths and advocate for personal needs within an adult applied learning environment
  3. Identify employment opportunities in line with personal interests, values and abilities
  4. Make informed choices that promote health, wellness and resilience needed for entry level work
  5. Follow safety expectations within applied learning activities
  6. Set and work from personal learning goals relating to essential skills that are in line with individual interests, needs and abilities
  7. Use digital technologies to learn and communicate about learning in this program

Curriculum


Additional Information


  • Students in the ETP program who have completed the South Island Partnership (SIP) Pathways for Life program (ETP 040 , ETP 041  and ETP 042 ) will be given a COM for ETP 010 .
