Overview

This part-time program offers high school students who have barriers to education and employment a non-academic, hands-on learning experience. The program focuses on the development of skills needed to successfully transition out of secondary school and the identification of behaviors necessary for adult independence. Students will explore on and off campus and community opportunities that will enable them to identify the best next step out of high school.

Further studies can include enrolment into Employment Training and Preparation Programs.

Admissions


All of:

  • Be enrolled in participating South Island Partnership secondary schools.
  • Submit the program-specific application package.
  • Attend an informational interview with an Employment Training and Preparation instructor to confirm program expectations, and discuss suitability.

Learning Outcomes


At the completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Locate and select college, work and community resources and supports.
  • Apply basic communication, self-advocacy, self-care and interpersonal skills suited to intercultural work and educational environments. Explain basic roles, rights and responsibilities of workers, adult learners and citizens.
  • Identify and apply problem solving techniques to assist in making decisions about future plans, goals, work and educational options while balancing work, school and wellness.
  • Explore their personal identity and how they will create new places of belonging in educational, community and/or work settings.
  • Complete a personal transition plan to move from secondary school to adult education and/or work.

Program Participation Requirements


  • Demonstrate appropriate behavior necessary to participate effectively and safely in classroom and community settings.
  • Arrange transportation to and from college and selected community locations.
