Overview

The Engineering Graphics Technician Program prepares graduates to have a foundation in, and a working knowledge of graphics software applications used within engineering and architectural design.

The program includes a special emphasis in 2D and 3D computer aided design and drafting, as well as design visualization, which includes still image rendering and engineering animation. Students are exposed to design and documentation standards used within several industry sectors, and provided with an introduction to typical engineering and architectural office software.

Career Opportunities

Technology-based firms and organizations require employees with expertise in technical information communication and graphics. Graduates who have gained these skills will be qualified to seek opportunities in a wide variety of industries, including but not limited to: engineering offices, architectural offices and high technology companies that require the use of technical publishing, 2D and 3D drafting and 3D visualization skills including Augmented/Virtual Reality applications

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Use computers to produce formatted documents, use spreadsheets to solve engineering problems, prepare documents, spreadsheets, presentations and generate simple databases.
  • Use computers to create, import and manipulate graphics, generate PDF documents, perform desktop publishing tasks and create 2D images.
  • Prepare working drawings for of Mechanical components and drawing sets of buildings using sketching 2D and 3D CAD techniques following appropriate standards. Read and understand building drawing sets. Use sketching and CAD to prepare building drawing sets to standards and styles using production practices.  Understand the workings of the drawing office and the construction site.
  • Produce drawings using sketching techniques, 2D and 3D CAD software that demonstrates speed and accuracy, drawing standards, standard drawing production practices, appropriate layout decisions and team work.
  • Use 3D CAD software to represent standard mechanical components.
  • Produce a functional set of engineering drawings using 3D software that includes details in 2D, exploded assemblies and Bill of Materials.
  • Create compelling still images and animations of mechanical devices and architectural designs.  Create technical documentation including brochures, tenders and user, installation and maintenance manuals. Work in teams to complete technical documents and drawing sets.
  • Explain the anatomy of a building and the building codes used to define it and either identify building system components, create an HVAC design from a sustainability perspective or create a mechanical project stock materials to manufacture a small project using hand and machine tools.
